Program Description

Can you confidently say that you know all you need to know about ICD-10 and how it impacts your practice and that of your organization? If not, we are here to help. We are offering this intermediate ICD-10 coding seminar to help you understand recent updates to the ICD-10-CM code set so your agency will be ready for the coming coding year. Without a working knowledge of the guidelines and conventions of the ICD-10-CM code set, there is a risk of substantial loss of productivity and revenue loss for organizations and professionals who are not proficient.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released 2,670 changes to ICD-10-CM on Oct. 1, 2016. This was the first update since the nation transitioned to the new code set after a five-year code freeze. Specifically, there were 1,943 new, 422 revised and 305 deleted codes. Every chapter had at least some new, revised or deleted codes; and thousands of additional changes are expected October 1, 2017 as well.

Audience

This coding seminar is for those who have coding experience in either ICD-9 or ICD-10 code sets and desire a refresher course on guidelines and conventions. Attendees will review the coding “rules” and learn how to apply them to commonly coded disease processes such as diabetes, cardiopulmonary diseases, wounds, neoplasms, GI/GU disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, strokes, fractures, as well as aftercare and status codes.

Learning Objectives

• Attendees will learn to apply current ICD-10-CM coding conventions and guidelines to common home health scenarios.
• Attendees will show proficiency in using the ICD-10-CM code set to select and sequence codes as instructed by official guidelines.
• Attendees will understand the coder's role in the agency as it applies to collecting and reporting diagnoses in cooperation with the clinician and physician provider.

Speaker Biography
Jennifer Gibson, RN, HCS-D, COS-C
Jennifer Gibson is a Registered Nurse with over 23 years of home health industry experience. She is a certified OASIS and Coding Specialist. She regularly trains on home health regulation including OASIS C2 and ICD-10 coding. She has held several leadership roles in the administration of home health agencies including Director of Nursing, Clinical Supervisor, and Administrator. Jennifer consults widely for home health agencies nationwide and is a sought-after contributor to industry blogs and publications. Jennifer is committed to the success of the home care industry and currently serves on several committees for the Texas Association for Home Care and Hospice. Jennifer has the heart of a teacher, and her passion is to support others in the home care industry.

Coding Manuals
Attendees will be required to bring a 2017 or 2018 (preferred) ICD-10-CM coding manual to class, as interactive coding scenarios will be an integral part of the learning experience. Code books will not be provided or sold at the event, and should be purchased ahead of time from Decision Health, Optum, or another reputable source. The instructor’s preferred manual is the 2018 Decision Health Home Health Coder’s Manual, available in August of 2017 here.

Continued Education Credits
This program has been designed to meet the continuing education requirements of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and pre-approved by the Board of Medical Specialty Coding and Compliance (BMSCC) for 10 HCS-D CEUs.

HCS-D certification exam fee for HCAC members is $296.10, and non-members pay $329.
